A Call To Give Back What You Gained

Today is a special day for us as a church. We celebrate 34 years of God’s faithfulness to us as a church. This church has been a great blessing to all of us. God has done some wonderful things through this church in the last 34 years. Part of celebration is evaluation. Anniversaries are great moments to look back how we arrived here today. Over time we tend to forget the hardships and remember only the blessings.

Paul could have taken great pride in what he had already accomplished (Phil 3:1214). Instead we see that he was not content and was still striving for more. Thus, I think it is important to remember that though we have been so blessed as a church in the last 34 years, but we still have a long way to go. God is not done with us yet.

I. Remember Our “Past”:
We have a rich history here at NLBPC. The ground -breaking service was held on 6th June 1982. It was a memorable and rejoicing occasion in the LORD. God provided total cost approximately $3,000,000 (including the Land – $933,000 & rest for the Building), graciously and generously through His people from Life BP Church, our mother Church, under the leadership of our late founding Pastor Rev (Dr) Timothy Tow who laid the foundation stone, declaring that “New Life was established to further the Gospel in Woodlands and Malaysia and the World”.

Almost 34 years before, the regular Sunday worship services were held in the home of Mr Jimmy Lim in Block 201, a group of 20 young adult (Beulanders) led by Rev Peter Eng, untill the building was completed. Later, on Easter Day 1983, started Worship service in New Life and an interim committee was appointed.

Let us remember, firstly, the faithfulness of God in providing a Place, a beautiful Building, a Team of Committed Leaders and community of faithful believers to Worship together. Secondly, the obedience and generosity of God’s people who were instrumental in preparing the way for the NLBPC with fervent prayer and evangelism, faithfully fulfilling God’s will in their life by giving and serving their Master in the vicinity of Marsiling and Woodlands.

II. Praise and thank God for the “Present”:
We must praise and thank God for His providence of three thriving congregations (English, Mandarin, and Tamil) that is alive and excited and desires to live for the Lord. We have learned the valuable lessons from our forerunners. Let us follow their footsteps by continuously striving to reach the lost in our community by serving the Lord in all facets of ministry, through giving our time, talents and treasure for the glory of His name. That’s what we have seen in the past and also the present but now…

III. Prepare for the “Future”:
The future of “New Life” depends on us. When I think about the future of NLBPC, two important things come to my mind. Firstly, “Press on”, my beloved New Lifers, your sincere service to Lord with existing leadership unitedly. Secondly, “Pass on” your godly legacy to your children and grandchildren, as we will not be here permanently. The road ahead is going to be very rough and challenging, as we need to raise and equip the next level of committed and faithful leadership. Next, the land lease will expire in 26 years, after which we are uncertain if it will be renewed.

Hence, in order to secure the future of New Life, we must obey the Great Commission by sharing the gospel locally and globally. As the foundation stone constantly reminds all New Lifers, “one of the objectives in setting up the church in woodlands was to facilitate the spreading of the Gospel not only in Singapore but also in Malaysia and the rest of the world”, by serving, giving and going. As the late Rev (Dr) Timothy Tow said, “It is never early or too late to give your life to serve Him full time”

We know the ministry of NLBPC will continue, no matter what may come, because NLBPC has been set upon a solid foundation, “And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. (Ezra 3:11). God was and is faithful in every aspect of this Church. We celebrate 34 years as a church today, but what we really celebrate is the goodness and grace of Jesus Christ. To Him and Him alone be the glory. May God bless you and your family abundantly.
